Executive Chairman
Michael is the founder, major shareholder and Executive Chairman of Balmain NB Corporation Limited. After working for the Australian Guarantee Corporation for 2 years, Michael established Balmain in 1979. Balmain is a broad based financial services company specialising in commercial property finance that employs over 140 staff in 8 offices in Australian and New Zealand. The company has a commercial loan portfolio of loans under advice of in excess of $6 billion and its services encompass loan origination, loan servicing, funds management and asset management.
Michael is the Chairman of Balmain Fund Administration Limited (AFS Licence 333213), responsible entity of the Balmain Discrete Mortgage Income Trusts (ARSN 155 909 176) and member of the Credit & Investment Committee.
Since 1994 he has been a director of AMAL Asset Management Limited. AMAL is Australia’s largest independent loan administrator (servicer) of commercial property mortgages. AMAL is an Above Average S&P rated service provider and currently manages in excess of $7 billion of commercial property loans for institutional investors.
Since 2004 he has been a director of Balmain Aqua Pty Limited. Balmain Aqua Pty Ltd was formerly known as Mirvac Aqua Pty Limited which was a joint venture between the Mirvac Group and the Balmain Corporation. In 2009 Balmain acquired Mirvac’s interests in this business. Michael remains a member of the Credit & Investment Committees.
Since 2009 he has been a director of Balmain Trilogy Investment Management Pty Limited being the investment manager of Pacific First Mortgage Fund (ARSN 088 139 477) (formerly City Pacific First Mortgage Fund) which is a joint venture between Balmain Group and Trilogy Funds Management Group.
Chief Executive Officer
Andrew commenced his career at Trafalgar Properties Limited in 1987. Andrew was Managing Director of this public company and was responsible for numerous large property developments and associated funding. On leaving Trafalgar in 1997 Andrew continued to work with Robert Whyte, John Singleton and Kerry Packer on numerous property developments as well as the acquisition, funding and management of various operating businesses. Andrew joined Balmain in 2005 and is currently Group Chief Executive. Under Andrew's guidance Balmain has expanded its core capacities from commercial debt origination to a financial services and funds management business with experience and capacity through all levels of secured private debt management. Andrew is RG146 compliant and a responsible manager under Balmain’s AFSL licence.
Head of Asset Management
Murry has over 30 years’ experience in property development, construction and project delivery undertakings, ranging from feasibility and due diligence studies, acquisition and statutory approvals to delivery of construction projects and disposal of completed assets. He joined the Marsim Group as a Development Manager in 1996, becoming Chief Executive Officer in 2002. Throughout his tenure at Marsim, Murry delivered over 2,000 residential land lots, 1,500 stratified residential apartments, 300 stratified medium density residential lots, 130 stratified industrial units and over 30,000 sqm of retail, bulky goods and commercial developments throughout Australia’s eastern states to an aggregate value exceeding $1.8 billion.Joining Balmain in 2010 Murry has been instrumental in building Balmain Asset Management taking the lead role in the delivery & completion of over $4.0 billion of property transactions, ranging from completion of partially completed apartment buildings& land sub-divisions plus the procurement of development approvals for various large scale property deals including masterplan communities including marina developments.
Head of Credit
Bill’s banking and finance career spans 40 years working notably with National Australia Bank, Citibank (vice president) and the ING group (general manager and head of domestic banking) specialising in commercial real estate credit and loan recovery. Bill’s vast experience is highlighted by the fact that in 1994 he was overseeing commercial loan portfolios of some $815m represented by circa 1,700 accounts. Prior to accepting overall portfolio management responsibilities he was personally settling about $100m per annum (3 year average of 90 loans p.a.) in new business and had a team of almost 20 people in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Bill also divided the portfolio management teams into sub teams headed by the portfolio manager with an analyst and admin assistant, just as Balmain does now. Bill single handedly achieved an S & P above average servicer ranking for AMM, long before AMAL achieved the same status.
Bill joined to head Balmain’s credit team in 2004. Since that time Bill has been responsible for all commercial mortgage lending from balance sheets under Balmain’s credit control and currently manages portfolios with an aggregate value exceeding $800m. Bill is a member of all Balmain credit committees.
Financial Controller
John has over 12 years’ experience in property and finance and is the Head of Finance for the Balmain Group. Prior to joining Balmain in October 2008, John was an auditor for more than eight years at KPMG in Sydney and PWC in London. John manages statutory reporting, management accounting, fund accounting and taxation of the Group. John has a Bachelor of Commence from Sydney University and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
Head of Sales
Tom joined Balmain in 2005 after having spent his entire working life in financial sales both internationally and nationally.
As head of sales at Balmain Tom sees opportunity in “keeping in touch” with both client and prospective borrower clients.
Tom has access to and knowledge of all the available Balmain financing solutions and is ASIC Regulatory Statement 146 (RG 146) compliant.
Head of Information Technology
Vik joined Balmain in 2005 as the Head of Information Technology. He has over 16 years’ experience in the Information Technology industry, along with extensive experience in project management, IT infrastructure, Database Administration, Systems Engineering, Web and Application Development. Vik leads the development of Balmain’s proprietary systems and it’s IT infrastructure and has valuable experience managing mission critical systems and projects. Vik holds a Managers Certificate in ITIL, a Bachelors degree in Computing and Information Systems and a Master of Business Administration (Technology) from the Australian Graduate School of Management. He is a Microsoft Certified Professional and an active member of the Australian Computer Society.
Head of Marketing
Quince is Group Head of Marketing and is responsible for the positioning and overall look and feel of the Balmain brand. Quinces role is to understand, respect, nurture and grow the brand internally and externally via all media and communication channels both traditional and non-traditional. Quince manages the Balmain Marketing & Graphic team that service the entire Balmain Group marketing and communication requirements.
Quince has been responsible for providing leading edge print and digital design and marketing for over 35 years across financial services, property development, tourism, human resources, rural, energy, liquor, manufacturing, entertainment and education industries in both the private and government sectors. He has worked closely with Balmain since its inception over 30 years ago.
Company Secretary
Simon has worked in the financial services industry for over 20 years’, both in London and Sydney. Simon has held management roles with Bankers Trust PLC, Bankers Trust Funds Management Australia Ltd, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Australia Ltd and more recently spent seven years at The Trust Company Limited. Simon joined Balmain in January 2010 as the Compliance Manager. He is a Senior Associate of FINSIA, has a Diploma in Finance and Investment (Managed Funds Stream) from the Securities Institute of Australia and a Certificate in Corporate Governance from the Chartered Secretaries Australia, and is also a member of the Governance Institute of Australia.
